Cartis Group Presents at 2005 TxCSL Summer Institute
Jason Gurule and Leslie Norris, of advertising and design agency Cartis Group, spoke at the 2005 Texas Center for Service-Learning (TxCSL) Summer Institute, which took place June 15-17 at the Marriott at the Capitol. They presented "Using Media to Enhance Your Service-Learning Project" on Wednesday, June 15.
"How lucky am I to have the opportunity to pass along my knowledge to the teachers of tomorrow's generation?" Gurule said. "It's a great opportunity and I am excited to be a part of it."
The presentation included two separate sessions attended by 15-20 high school and charter school teachers from around the state. Gurule and Norris offered instruction on basic public relation and advertising techniques as well as lessons in media relations to help teachers garner attention for their students and the service-learning projects they're involved in. As part of the activities, teachers learned to identify target audiences and practiced recording themselves doing mock PSAs.
"It was a great opportunity for teachers to share their success stories with others and it was especially helpful in acknowledging the differences between media coverage in small towns verses big cities," Norris said.
The TxCSL is a statewide initiative of Region 14 Education Service Center (ESC) and the Texas Education Agency that provides statewide leadership to support service-learning through programs, training, and technical assistance.
